Product Description

Aquilegia formosa Western Columbine flowers are dangling delicacies of red and gold that provide much needed food for hummingbirds, bees & butterflies. A beautiful native found growing in a wide range of conditions from chaparral to forest meadows throughout the West from Alaska to California. Easily grown due to wide ranging adaptability to many garden conditions but in hot dry areas it will need summer water. Perfect for around bird baths taking advantage of filtered shade and the extra moisture from splashing birds and bath maintenance (which is important for healthy birds). Birds will feel safe with the bushy cover and relish the seeds too. The size of these plants is variable depending on how happy they are with the growing conditions. Due to their native climate cold stratification typically improves germination. Mixing seed with damp sand in a plastic baggie and placing in the refrigerator for 8 weeks prior to sowing or sow in containers placed outside for the winter where the temperature will fall into the 30's F.
